May 12th, 2010Can’t Open Any Programs Without “Choose the Program you want to use to Open This File”
May 12th, 2010Problem:
Every time you try to launch a program you get prompted with Choose the Program you want to use to Open This File.
Cause:
You recently had a virus or malware infection that changed some critcal registry entries so that the virus would be launched whenever you opened any program. The virus has been removed but the registry entry remains so Windows is asking which program to run instead of the virus.
Solution:
You need to repair the registry entries.
You can temporarily launch programs by right-clicking the shortcut and choosing Run As…
This will allow you to run MalwareBytes which can detect the registry problem and fix it for you.

- Length of CAT5 cable runs should not exceed 100 meters.
- It is very important that a single pair be used for pins 1 and 2; 3 and 6. If not, performance will degrade.
CAT5 Splitter Trick
Given that Pins 4-5,7-8 are not used in a standard 100MB connection, it is possible to attach a second RJ45 jack which places these wires in the 1-2,3-6 position in the jack. This allows you to run 2 connections over a single cable. While this trick works, it is probably not ideal and could cause packet loss. I have done this for non-critical equipment such as network printers. This trick does not work with Gigabit links as they require all 8 pins.
How to Deploy Microsoft Forefront Client Security Client Software
May 6th, 2010They could not have made this any more difficult. After much searching, I found this information:
Deploying Client Security
The client components of Client Security consist of a Client Security agent and a MOM agent. The Client Security agent scans for vulnerabilities and malware. The MOM agent collects the data, which is then used to generate reports for Client Security. To deploy both agents, use the following procedure.
To directly deploy the Client Security components
- Log on to the client computer by using local administrator permissions.
- Insert the Client Security CD.
- Open the Command Prompt window.
- Do one of the following:
- To install Client Security on a client computer running a 32-bit version of Windows, type cd drive\Client.
- To install Client Security on a client computer running a 64-bit version of Windows, type cd drive \Client\x64.
- Press ENTER and run ClientSetup with the following parameters:
- /I InstallationFolder in which InstallationFolder is the location in which you want to install Client Security. This parameter is optional. The default installation folder is at the following location:
%Program Files\Microsoft Forefront\Client Security\client - /L LoggingFolder in which LoggingFolder is the location in which you want Client Security to log issues encountered during the installation. This parameter is optional. The default logging folder is at the following location:
%Program Files\Microsoft Forefront\Client Security\client\logs - /NOMOM in which the /NOMOM flag installs everything except the MOM agent. If you use the /NOMOM flag, do not use the /CG and /MS flags.
- /CG ManagementGroup in which ManagementGroup is the name of the management group. If you do not specify the management group, the name will be retrieved automatically from the Client Security policy deployed to the client computer. This parameter must be used with the /MS parameter.
- /MS CollectionServer in which CollectionServer is the name of the collection server. If you do not specify the collection server, the name will be retrieved automatically from the Client Security policy deployed to the client computer. This parameter must be used with the /CG parameter.
- /R reinstalls the Client Security agent and the MOM agent. This parameter first verifies that the existing version is older than or equal to the currently installed version, then triggers a reinstall.
- /I InstallationFolder in which InstallationFolder is the location in which you want to install Client Security. This parameter is optional. The default installation folder is at the following location:
- Press ENTER.
- When the tool finishes running, close the Command Prompt window.

Comcast Spam Blacklist (RBL) Removal
April 21st, 2010Problem:
You send emails to yourfriend@comcast.net and you get a message back from your server that delivery has been delayed. After a couple days you get another message from your server that says delivery has failed. Most spam filters will outright reject your message and tell you why but Comcast simply delays the message forever.
Solution:
If you happen to have access to your SMTP logs, you can find this information:
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Comcast block for spam. Please see http://help.comcast.net/content/faq/BL000000
Reading that page will lead you to this page where you can request to be unblocked.
It would sure be a lot easier if they would reject the message and send this link like everyone else does.

Promise Fastrak TX4310 2TB Limit
March 26th, 2010If you try to build a RAID array larger than 2TB (like trying to install a set of four 1TB drives) it will show the capacity of the array as some crazy number. You must keep the size under 2TB with this card or install a better card.
